this weekend @ sfbc - September 20th

sfbc family,

"Like Mike I want to be like Mike" . . . remember that Nike commercial. Michael Jordan is possibly the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. Recently, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame along with David Robinson, Jerry Sloan, John Stockton, and C. Vivian Stringer. Induction in to the hall of fame is a huge honor for anyone. Each person inducted into the hall of fame shares a speech mostly thanking the people in their lives that helped them and reflecting on their career. Kind of a time to remember and counting blessings. This year there was a remarkable difference between the speeches shared by Michael Jordan and David Robinson, one was humble, an expression of thanksgiving, an example of faith, and the other expressed self and an emptiness that things can not fill.
Voddie Baucham recently wrote about this in his blog. Here is a quote and a link to the article . . . worth reading even if you don't like basketball (might be sin in Kentucky). Be like David not like Mike. Amen Voddie . . .

There was a stark difference between the two acceptance speeches. As I listened to the two speeches, all I could think of was the old commercial catchphrase, “Like Mike... If I could be like Mike.” Unfortunately, in this instance, Mike was the last person anyone should aspire to be like. This was definitely not a Michael Jordan highlight. Jordan’s Speech was self-centered, indulgent, arrogant, and at times embarrassing. In contrast, David Robinson rose to the occasion and made a brief, inspiring, encouraging speech that made his family, his team, and his friends proud.

David Elevated Others... Mike Elevated Mike, David Honored His Family... Mike Honored Himself, David Was Brief... Mike Was Indulgent, David Honored God... Mike Honored Basketball, David sees His Legacy in His Family... Mike sees His Legacy in His Highlights

Week of prayer for State Missions and Eliza Broadus Mission offering for Kentucky Sunday, September 13th will begin a week of prayer for missions in Kentucky. This week Baptist all across Kentucky will be praying for missionaries and ministries that reach out to the ethic groups and unreached people right here at home. Kentucky has a great number of unreached people and people who have been in church at some point in their lives and have left the church, many of these people have never truly trusted Christ. There will be a prayer guide in this weeks bulletin and offering envelopes in the pews. Please pray for missions in Kentucky and give so that we might reach our state for Christ. Here is a pdf file of the prayer guide http://www.kywmu.org/clientimages/36717/eboprayerbulletin09.pdf
